Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Curriculum & Instruction

Curriculum and Instruction supports the development, review, and delivery of academic programs at Morris Brown College. This area helps ensure that students have clear degree pathways, relevant courses, strong instruction, and learning experiences that prepare them for graduation, career opportunities, graduate study, and leadership.

Academic Affairs works with faculty, academic departments, the Office of the Registrar, and College leadership to guide curriculum planning, course development, instructional quality, academic policy review, and program improvement.

MBC Core Competencies

The General Education Core gives every Morris Brown student a strong academic foundation. These courses help students build essential skills in writing, communication, reasoning, research, technology, cultural understanding, and scientific thinking.

The MBC Core defines the foundational academic expectations for all students at Morris Brown College:

Academic Writing

Every student must complete at least one academic paper per course to strengthen writing, critical thinking, and scholarly communication skills.

Collaborative Learning

Each course must include at least one group project to promote teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Oral Communication

All students are required to give at least one speech or presentation per course. In asynchronous online courses, this may be submitted as a pre-recorded video presentation.

Research Competency

Students must engage in course-related research utilizing the college library and its digital or physical resources, fostering information literacy and academic inquiry.

Technology Integration

Students are expected to use appropriate technology tools and platforms in every course, supporting digital literacy and engagement in modern learning environments.

Academic Planning

Academic program planning is an ongoing process. Academic Affairs works with faculty and departments to review current programs, support course planning, strengthen degree pathways, and explore new academic opportunities.

Curriculum Review and Governance

Curriculum review is a shared academic responsibility. Faculty and academic leaders review courses and programs to make sure they are current, coherent, and aligned with student learning goals.

The Committee on Curriculum and Instruction supports curriculum development, instructional policies, academic standards, faculty development, and student learning.

The Academic Council reviews academic programs, curriculum proposals, academic standards, and policies that affect teaching and learning across the College.

Online and Digital Learning

Morris Brown College supports online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced learning through Academic Affairs and Educational Technology and Online Learning.

Online and hybrid courses are expected to meet the same academic standards as face-to-face courses. These courses should include clear expectations, organized course materials, regular faculty-student interaction, meaningful assignments, and multiple ways for students to show what they have learned.

Brightspace serves as the College’s learning management system and supports course content, assignments, grades, discussions, communication, and learning activities.

Academic Advising and Student Planning

Academic advisement is required for degree-seeking students. Advisors help students understand degree requirements, select courses, review academic progress, explore majors, and prepare for graduation.

Students should use the College Catalog, Degree Audit tools, Populi, and advisor guidance to stay on track. Students are responsible for knowing the academic requirements that apply to their program of study.
