This proposed course is the first section of Black Music History and serves as an
introduction to the art of songwriting through the lens of Black composers, lyricists, and
songwriters who shaped popular music but were often overlooked. Students will
examine the evolution of Black songwriting, from early classical compositions to blues,
jazz, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and contemporary pop. Through historical study, lyrical
analysis, and hands-on songwriting workshops, students will develop both a critical
understanding of Black music history and practical skills in lyric writing, melody
construction, and song composition.
