This proposed course examines the intersection of race, gender, and Black female
identity in contemporary pop music through the lens of Black Feminist Theory and
Utopian Studies. Using Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 as a central text, students
will analyze how Black women artists have used music, performance, and visual media
to construct both utopian and dystopian narratives of identity, liberation, and resistance.
